The BPW Crisis Centre is a project of the Business & Professional Women’s Club of Barbados (BPW Barbados). The training is a 20-hour programme that will cover various aspects of receiving and handling crisis calls related to Gender Based Violence (GBV). The programme will take place on four alternate Saturdays, Feb 1, 15, March 1, March 15 2014 for a total of 20 hours. It is open to people who work in GBV, NGOs, students and persons who are generally interested.
Interested persons will be required to take a standard screening assessment prior to registration. The sessions will be delivered by qualified personnel and professionals skilled in aspects of Gender Based Violence and Crisis Management.
The BPW Crisis Hotline has been in existence for 27 years beginning in 1986 as a rape hotline in response to a number of rapes that occurred in Barbados during that period. The name was later changed to the BPW Crisis Centre in order to provide increased services to a wider cross-section of the public.
The Crisis Centre offers 24 hour confidential telephone and face-to-face counselling, in the area of gender based violence (domestic violence, rape and sexual assault, family violence), relationship issues, and suicides. The crisis hotline serves as the first point of contact for entrance into safe housing provided by BPW or a related service. It also the educational and informational arm of the BPW Barbados Club’s Gender Based Violence Programme, providing training to groups such as police, lawyers, social workers and nurses and more.
